    Unity of Olympia's Future - a Visioning Group

    Please join Reverend Terry in opening to the guidance of Spirit to lead Unity of Olympia going forward. It is not too late to register! We welcome your presence and participation.

    The Visioning Group will be a hybrid meeting on the third Friday of each month at 5:00 PM, May through November. Attendees can register for either in-person attendance or online via Zoom.

    Through these meetings, we will:

    1. clarify and understand the challenges that face our spiritual community;
    2. engage the power of Spirit through prayer to envision the highest and best future;
    3. provide the Council of Trustees recommendations for the future of Unity of Olympia.

    This work will be guided by the Creative Process as described by Reverend Eric Butterworth. Between gatherings, each member of the Visioning Group will be invited to practice this Visioning Prayer work and encouraged to brainstorm with one another.

    Registration is required and we ask that you commit to attending as many meetings as you can, to the best of your ability. If you have any questions, please contact us at office@unityofolypmia.org.

    The Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls

    with Ian Werrett, Ph.D.

    Sundays, July 11 and 18 | 11:30 am

    Please join us in welcoming guest speaker, Ian Werrett, Ph.D. to Unity of Olympia. Ian will be speaking during Sunday service and then presenting two lectures to our community about the Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls. We hope you will join us for this very special event. Cost: $100 per person. Please bring a brown bag lunch.

    Lecture One – Sunday, July 11, 11:30 am

    Caves and Questions: The Discovery and Contents of the Dead Sea Scrolls”

    Lecture Two – Sunday, July 18, 11:30 am

    “Sects, Movements, and Scripture: The Greco-Roman Context of the Scrolls”

    Course Description: In 1947, in a cave along the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, a young Bedouin shepherd from Bethlehem made one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century – the so-called Dead Sea Scrolls. In the ensuing years, archaeologists and Bedouin succeeded in recovering over nine-hundred scrolls from a total of eleven caves near an ancient site known as Khirbet Qumran. The discovery of these ancient Jewish texts, which include the oldest known copies of the books of the Old Testament, have completely revolutionized our understanding of Second Temple Judaism, the compositional history of the Hebrew Bible, and the era in which the early Christian community came into existence. As a brief introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls, this two-part lecture series will focus on the discovery of the scrolls, their contents, major themes, and the larger world in which these texts were collected and composed.

    Biography:Ian Werrett is a Professor of Religious Studies at Saint Martin's University and an internationally recognized expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews in Biblical Studies and Second Temple Judaism (2006) and has published articles on Jewish purity practices, Greco-Roman libraries, and literacy in the ancient world. Werrett has worked on the Dead Sea Scrolls in Jerusalem, acted as a member of the Pacific Science Center’s Dead Sea Scrolls Speaker’s Bureau, and published a monograph with Brill Academic Publishers entitled Ritual Purity and the Dead Sea Scrolls (2007).
