When: Saturday August 29 at 10 am
Where: Squaxin Park Trailhead, on Flora Vista Road NE Olympia. This entrance is north of the main park entrance. Head west on Flora Vista Road NE, the parking lot is on the left side (south side) of the road, just after you turn onto Flora Vista. There seems to be plenty of parking, but I encourage car pooling.
What: We will hike on the Squaxin Park Loop. All Trails lists it as 1.7 miles in length, with a 95 foot elevation gain; BUT I think it is longer than 1.7 miles on the route listed in All Trails. We can also do a shorter hike of 1.45 miles by cutting over to another trail to return to the parking lot. The start of the trail is wide and gravel; rest of trail varies from packed dirt with some root sticking out, to areas with slight up/down, to flat areas with gravel. Many views of the adjacent Budd Inlet. The trail is forested pretty much the whole way, so should be nice and shaded and cool. I expect the hike to take 1 - 1.5 hours, depending on our pace. My hikes are about paying attention to nature and building community. I will set the pace per the slowest person.
What to know: If the daytime temps are over about 85 degrees, I will cancel the hike. Dogs are allowed on a leash. There are NO bathrooms at the parking lot or on the trail. Parking is free.
What to bring: bring plenty of water, snacks; maybe binoculars. I would suggest a sturdy pair of boot/shoes as the ground is uneven in spots with tree roots/rocks sticking up. This is a slightly more challenging hike than I have led in the past but you can do it!!!!
Optional lunch after: for those interested, we will head to Farmers Market for lunch/shopping; probably close to noon.
